Upcoming events

Updated August 6/20

Too late, you missed it events

Pebbles and small cobbles, 2pm on July 11, 2019
GaLTT Summer Event at Blue Heron Community Park. We'll be collecting rocks from Whalebone beach and trying to figure out what they're made of and where they came from. A family event.

GERTIE Beach tour, August 20, 2017. Cemetery Beach, Bells Landing, Berry Point.

Antique Rock Show:  Fall Fair at the Commons, Sunday, September 22, 2013. Bring along an interesting rock or fossil you've found for indentification and analysis. We'll have microscopes and other geological tools on hand. Look for the GaLTT table.

Pebble Adventure, 2pm on August 11, 2013
Bluewhale Community Park (Entrance is at junction of Whalebone Drive and Killerwhale Lookout)
Contrary to GaLTT members' letter, this is not a "for kids only" event. What we'll do is go out on the beach in small groups, collect cobbles and pebbles that look interesting, bring them back to the park, sort them, and then talk about what we know, and don't know, about them. Although, this is not a children's event; children are sometimes extraordinarily adept at finding interesting things, so they're welcome, and if they come along, they can, if they like, help us with the collecting, and we'll do our best to describe any extra-special rocks they find.

Poster: From Cretaceous to Holocene - the geological history of Gabriola Island, Haven Auditorium, Thurs. May 9, 2013.

Settlers on Gabriola farmed, logged, fished, and... quarried. Jenni Gehlbach will be presenting at the Island Studies Conference 2013, May 10-12, on Gabriola's Industrial Past, which included, brickmaking from shale, cutting sandstone for buildings, drilling millstones, and quarrying diatomaceous earth. Ship-building will also be in there.

Gabriola Historical and Museum Society/SHALE

APOLOGY: Talk at The ROXY July 23, 2010, & boat trip July 25 were cancelled by the museum because of insurance issues. Sorry about that.

Orginal notice: There is going to be a boat trip to Valdes on July 25 to see the cliffs there. The erosion patterns in the sandstone are quite spectacular. There is also going to be a slide show at the ROXY on July 23. This is both a pre-trip talk and for anyone with an interest in sandstone and its geology.
